Position Summary

The Assistant Controller is responsible for directing the property accounting team, financial reporting, and tax compliance. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an ability to partner with senior management, middle management and staff to identify opportunities to improve processes, systems, and overall team capabilities. He/she will be adept at operating in high-volume, deadline-driven environments and thrive in an entrepreneurial and rapidly evolving atmosphere.

Essential Functions

  • Develop, coach and lead property accounting team of approximately 6+ individuals

  • Manage the monthly accounting close process to ensure timely, accurate, and consistent financial reporting across the Company

  • Prepare financial statements & analytics to be presented to leadership

  • Maintain the chart of accounts and account trees in Yardi

  • Prepare quarterly and annual REIT compliance testing, annual tax return distribution and other tax related items

  • Assist with the annual financial statement audits

  • Evaluate team workflows to propose and implement improvements in efficiencies and automation

  • Interface and work cross-functionally with other departments in the Company to attain Company goals and objectives

  • Performs special projects as directed


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance

  • CPA a plus

  • 10 or more years of related experience

  • Experience with Yardi

  • Strong accounting and financial reporting skill set

  • Experience with financial controls and control documentation

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Strong excel skills and a mind for data management

  • Real estate / residential / REIT experience is a plus
